The Best Biking Hydration Pack I've Owned I needed a hydration pack with a large carrying capacity for a trans himalayan ride last fall. As panniers were not practical I did a lot of research on large hydration packs and settled on the Trans Alpine 30. I own a whole slew of hydration packs (Deuter Race X, a Novara buzz, and a Camelback Hawg). anyway, enough background and on to the review: - Airstripes Backsystem: This is a nice system where there are two mesh covered stripes running down the back and this is the only point of contact to your back so no sweaty backs. However if you were to consider the AC (Aircontact) version of this pack, note that it has less usable room in the back (even though Deuter says they are the same). I do prefer the AC back but need the extra space ofthe Airstripes version. - Multiple front pockets There are two directly accessible front pockets. The top pocket has a key fob, small mesh pockets and a zippered pocket inside it. Ideal for your mobile, ipod. The bottom pocket is good for keeping your energy bars and bike knick-knacks. - Side mesh pockets It has 2 side mesh pockets which would easily fit 32 oz Nalgene bottles. It also has 2 side zip pockets on each waist belt. I really found no use for these other than storing nose tissue, and lib balm. - Rain Cover It has a bright yellow reflective integrated rain cover which can be removed if you wish. It is stored in it's separate pocket at the bottom of the pack. - Helmet holder I really hate this design. I much prefer a bungee cord to store a helmet. I used it to carry a jacket or apullover. - There are reflective accents on the pack- the oval "Deuter' logo in the back and reflective patches on the shoulder straps. - Dividable main compartment The inside of this pack is cavernous and it made of a light grey material so it is easy to find things in the pack. It has panel top and "sleeping bag" style bottom access. The main compartment can be divided via a zippered trapdoor flap in the bottom compartment. I used this for wet clothes and shoes. - 2 Liter reservoir. Let me put it this way - it is no worse (and no better ;-) than any of the stuff on the market. This is one of my complaints with manufacturers. Why can't someone come up with a good bladder ? I have used Deuter's, MSR, Ultimate Direction, Nalgene and Camelbacks and they are all lack in some area or the other. Camelbacks are probably barely better by just a hair. - Loop to attach a LED Blinker. Deuter, are you listening ? The loop on this pack is smaller than those on your other packs. As a result, only blinkers with narrow clips can be inserted. So your old honker with 16 flashing LEDS and a wide clip that you used on your Race X pack can no longer be used on this pack while commuting. Please fix this in future packs. So to summarize, nitpickings aside, this is an absolutely fantastic pack, and Deuter has spared no design compromises. In fact, it looks like every designer at Deuter has had a go at this pack. It lacks nothing, and is so thoughtfully designed that it grows on you as you use it more and more (you will experience a lot of "aha, so that's why they did this..." moments.) On the downside, all the straps and zippers do add to weight and it is not a lightweight pack. But it screams German engineering and quality - It sits perfectly, is infinitely adjustable and wears like a glove.

Is this Handy? - Yes - No ( 4 of 5 found this review helpful.)
